United Housing, Inc. (UHI) is a nonprofit affordable housing agency that serves the City of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. UHI targets its services to families that are under served by the traditional homeownership industry. UHI works to support the revitalization of Memphis neighborhoods through the provision of construction services, homebuyer education and counseling and affordable lending products to low-to-moderate, first time homebuyers.
Founded in 1994, as an affiliate of the United Way of the Mid-South and funded through two Hope III awards from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, UHI has continued to leverage grant funds with private financing. Today, for every $1 of subsidy, UHI leverages $5 from private sector funding.
In January 2000, UHI formally incorporated as an independent organization and soon after became part of the NeighborWorks® Network. Through NeighborWorks®, UHI is linked to a national network of over 230 local nonprofit organizations working to revitalize America's declining neighborhoods by supporting homeownership and preserving housing affordable to low-to-moderate-income families.
In June 2002, United Housing increased its impact on its target communities by receiving Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) designation from the U S Department of Treasury. This certification allows UHI to tap into federal funding that increases the effectiveness of local dollars spent on neighborhood revitalization.
Since its inception, UHI has provided homebuyer education and counseling to over 5000 first time homebuyers, facilitating the sale of over a 1450 homes and lending over $6 million in down payment assistance and rehabilitation loans. In total, UHI has had a $121 million impact on its service area.
