Lucy
Owens’ midtown condominium was a rare find on the
HUD foreclosure list, and with its built in shelves and
detailed appointments she knew instantly this was home.
“I would still be renting if I had not discovered
United Housing’s programs. I am so grateful for
the opportunity to have my own home.”
As one of UHI’s first clients,
Lucy attended UHI’s homebuyer education classes
and received a special down payment assistance grant from
UHI through the U.S. Department Housing and Urban Development.
Even though Lucy has a smaller yard
than most homeowners, she still has responsibilities.
“After the house warming party, I bought a few things,
a hose, some basic tools and a weedeater. You have new
responsibilities. It’s important to save, so when
it is time to fix things you can. I want to make sure
my house keeps up with the neighbors’.”
Lucy’s home is nestled in
a secluded nook of midtown where she knows her neighbors
and they look out for each other. Of the four units surrounding
her, only one is rental and she feels this has lead to
a sense of stability.
“The biggest challenge of
being a homeowner is learning to prioritize things in
your life. You need to be able to maintain your home.”
Lucy protects her investment by sound budgeting and careful
maintenance inside and out. She is happy to know that
when she retires, she will own her home.
Lucy Owens purchased her home
in 1995.
